MATLOCK CANOE CLUB

CaNews

Spring into Summer 2022

Firstly, can I offer a very warm welcome to our new members. I hope you have many happy years with the club.

Club members have been busy over the last few weeks, since the floods in February. I am very happy to report that the floodlights are still working. (Thanks Colin for all your work on the lights).

The slalom gates are now back up, many thanks to the team that spent many hours on this. A huge thanks too to Pete Astles from Peak UK for donating the line.

This weekend we will be meeting on Saturday and Sunday morning to rebuild the groynes, that create the flow and eddies. If you are able to offer a few hours, please get in touch.

The final job will be to repair three sets of steps down the far bank. I am trying to arrange a meeting with the landowner to get permission for this work. If you have skill and experience to project manage this work, please can you get in touch.

Club sessions are now running regularly on Wednesday (general paddling) and Thursday (slalom training). These usually start about 6.30/7.00 pm. Any changes will be discussed on the WhatsApp Groups. If you have not signed up to our WhatsApp groups, please send me your phone number and I will add you.

WhatsApp Groups

Matlock Canoe Club have three WhatsApp Groups to keep you informed

Matlock Canoe Club – For information about club trips, pool sessions, river work etc.

MCC Wednesday Group

MCC Thursday Group

Derwent Paddlers is another WhatsApp group where paddlers can get together to arrange trips.

Access on the River Derwent

Historically, the founders of Matlock Canoe Club secured access on the River Derwent. The only legally agreed access is between Artists Corner and the Heights of Abraham footbridge. If you arrange a trip outside this area, please do not do it in the name of Matlock Canoe Club. Paddle Peak are campaigning to increase access on the Derwent. Please have a look at their website:  https://www.paddlepeak.org/
