Go-Canoeing Sessions

Age restrictions: ages 9-18 years old.

If you have been canoeing before, Starter Sessions are also a great opportunity to find out what the local club or centre has to offer. Perhaps it has been a while since you were last on the water or maybe you want to share your passion, and introduce family and friends to the sport?

Whatever your motivation, Starter Sessions will provide an ideal opportunity to get out on the water and try canoeing.

These taster sessions are ideal for absolute beginners- you do not need any experience, kit or special skills and it is suitable for everyone from 8 years old. To find out more click here.

River Sessions

Mondays (Matlock Bath Slalom Site) Flatwater/Introduction to moving water (6.45 – 8.00)

Monday evenings (April to Mid-July) is our formal coaching evenings where there is formal coaching provided on the river at the Slalom Site. This can include Paddlepower and BCU 1-3 star flat water awards, and also an introduction to moving water.

Tuesday Evening: Whitewater Holme Pierrepont Sessions (7.00-9.00)

On occasional Tuesday evenings, especially during the summer, the club meets at the white water course at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham (water fees apply). No formal coaching takes place but informal coaching will be given by the instructors who are present.

Wednesday and Thursday Evening: River Derwent Sessions (7.00-9.00)

On Wednesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer we make use of our facilities at River Derwent Slalom Site.

Wednesday evening is generally a “free” session with members able to practice what they like. Usually this will mean most people are down on the moving water. If you are a beginner, then you will be expected to go down to the weir with the instructors.  Informal coaching will be given on moving water by the instructors who are present. No formal coaching will take place on a Wednesday night.

Thursday evening is our slalom coaching evening where there is formal coaching provided for all abilities.

The Club has a larger selection of boats and equipment which can be used during the Monday/Wednesday/Thursday night sessions. Unfortunately we do not have changing and shower facilities available; please change beside the roadside or promenade discreetly.

These sessions are primarily aimed at people wishing to progress onto river trips and weekends away. Please note that there is no charge for the river sessions, however you must be a paid up member to come on the river for insurance reasons.

Note

Matlock Canoe Club may charge a small fee for certain river sessions for the use of club equipment.
